So your customer has taken the first step and purchased their contents and buildings insurance with us. But don’t stop there. It’s important that customers go one step further to ensure that if they have to make a claim, they are fully prepared.

The following guideline, brought to our attention by www.homeinsurance.co.uk, can help create an easy, hassle free claims process to ensure the customer doesn’t miss out on a claim.

1. Don’t let your client insure less than what they’re worth - Your client will need to take all their contents into consideration when applying for their home insurance and when purchasing any valuables thereafter including objects in the garage and shed.

2. Make sure your client wins the race against the clock - Your client should check if there is a limited time period to make a claim. If any of their items have been stolen from the home, the police should be informed within 24 hours and a crime reference number should be obtained.

3. What, how and where? - Your client should have all the details to hand when making a claim – what happened, how it happened and where is happened. Proof of purchase can also speed up the claims process.

4. Collect evidence - It is important to take photos of what has happened, whether it is a break in or flood damage. Photographic evidence of any expensive items than your client owns can act as proof of ownership.

5. Don’t break the rules - Your client should not exaggerate or lie about a claim. The customer should read the terms and conditions of their policy prior to making a claim to see if they have broken one of the clauses in it.

6. Is it worth a claim? - If your customer needs to pay an excess and their claim isn’t very high, they may want to look at repairing it themselves to avoid paying this excess and making a claim on their policy.

Just a few little tips can keep your client feel reassured, happy and secure.
